ABB Hit by Ransomware Attack: Company Investigates Data Theft and Restores Infrastructure
ABB admits that a ransomware incident led to the exfiltration of their data
ABB, the industrial automation giant, has been hit by a ransomware attack earlier this month, according to reports. The Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation, which ranks among the top 500 enterprises globally according to Fortune, operates in over 100 countries and employs approximately 100,000 people.
The attack occurred via a press release and FAQ about the attack, which were issued by ABB last week. Information about the incident was shared with customers and posted on Mastodon by cybersecurity researcher Kevin Beaumont.
ABB has confirmed that no customer systems were directly impacted by the ransomware attack. However, the specific data stolen during the attack remains unspecified. The ongoing investigation into the nature and scope of the data affected is being conducted with assistance from law enforcement, government officials, and third-party experts.
The ransomware deployed was not self-propagating and affected a limited number of servers and endpoints. ABB's key services, systems, and factories are currently operating, but the company is still restoring impacted infrastructure and strengthening its defenses.
ABB's business spans 21 divisions including industrial machinery, robotics, manufacturing, oil, gas, renewable energy, automotive, food processing, household products, medical equipment, and communications, among others. The company operates a significant portion of its workforce in the U.S., with roughly one-fifth of its employees based in the country.
During the first quarter of 2023, ABB banked over $1 billion in net income on almost $7.9 billion in revenue. Despite the recent attack, the company's financial performance has remained strong.
At the time of writing, there are no publicly available details or credible reports identifying the perpetrator of the ransomware attack on ABB. ABB has not identified the threat actor behind the attack.
ABB remains committed to transparency and will provide updates as more information becomes available. The company is working diligently to ensure the security of its systems and the protection of its customers' data.
