Actor Colm Meaney expresses doubts about whether Star Trek necessitates an aged Miles O'Brien character.

In the realm of Star Trek's streaming renaissance, it's clear that Deep Space Nine (DS9) has been the quiet achiever, often overshadowed by other series like Picard and Prodigy. Despite a few nods and voice-overs in Lower Decks, DS9 hasn't quite reached the same level of attention as its counterparts.

Colm Meaney, the mastermind behind Chief O'Brien on The Next Generation (TNG) and all seven seasons of DS9, recently shared his thoughts on the subject with Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette. "I think seven years in a space suit was enough, you know?" he mused. "I’m often asked that question, and you never say never, of course, but first of all, I wouldn't fit in it anymore..."

The question of reprising roles in Star Trek has been answered with an abundance of success in the past few decades, with Colm acknowledging this fact. "They successfully did it with Star Trek and they're still doing it. Good luck to them," he added, before somewhat dismissing the idea of his own return, stating, "Do you want to see an elderly Miles O'Brien? I don't know. It's certainly not at the top of my agenda of things I’d like to do at the moment."

While Meaney may underestimate the fervor of Star Trek fans, particularly DS9's, there's undoubtedly potential for revisiting the DS9 universe. The lingering impact of the Dominion War on characters could provide gripping storylines, similar to Picard's initial season before it veered into hero deification.

Despite meaning's reluctance, it's not inconceivable for the DS9 cast to return, albeit without O'Brien at the center. Perhaps he's enjoying a peaceful retirement with Keiko and tinkering with holodeck-tabletop wargames instead.

As the DS9 fanbase eagerly awaits more news, keep a watchful eye for upcoming Marvel, Star Wars, and Doctor Who releases, as well as the future of the DC Universe on film and TV.
