AI company OpenAI recruits previous executive from Meta and Instacart during organizational revamp

Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart, has stepped into a new role as CEO of OpenAI's Applications division, with current CEO Sam Altman focusing more on AGI research, compute, and safety. Simo will remain at the helm of Instacart during the transition before taking on the Chair of the board role.

This leadership change is part of OpenAI's efforts to accelerate progress towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Simo brings her expertise in scaling company operations to OpenAI as it enters a new phase of growth. Before joining Instacart, Simo spent a decade at Meta (formerly Facebook), where she served as Head of the Facebook App, overseeing features like News Feed, Stories, Groups, Marketplace, and Facebook Live.

Upon announcing the move, Altman praised Simo's commitment to OpenAI's mission, stating that she will focus on enabling traditional functions to scale as OpenAI enters this next phase. Simo expressed her excitement about contributing to OpenAI's mission and her admiration for OpenAI's President and co-founder, Greg Brockman.

Meanwhile, Altman's biometric ID project, World, is facing growing scrutiny. The project, which originally aimed to verify identity using iris scans in exchange for cryptocurrency, has run into regulatory issues in places like Kenya and Indonesia. Despite these setbacks, World recently expanded into six major US cities, including San Francisco, Miami, and Austin. The project has partnerships with companies like Visa and Match Group (owner of Tinder), signaling broader ambitions beyond crypto identity verification.

As OpenAI reshuffles its leadership and World faces challenges, both organizations continue to push the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence and biometric technologies.

  1. Among her impressive career moves, Fidji Simo is now leading OpenAI's Applications division, a role previously held by Sam Altman who is focusing more on cryptocurrency-related projects such as World.
  2. In her new position, Simo will ensure the scaling of traditional functions within OpenAI, as the company enters a new phase of growth centered around Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and technology advancements.
  3. With her expertise in scaling company operations, acquired from her tenure at Meta and currently at Instacart, Simo is well-equipped to guide OpenAI's Applications division towards success.
  4. Simo's transition to OpenAI also brings a change at Instacart, where she will remain the CEO during the interim before moving to the Chair of the board role.
  5. Meanwhile, Altman's biometric ID project, World, is facing regulatory challenges in countries like Kenya and Indonesia, despite its recent expansion into six major US cities.
  6. World's partnerships with companies like Visa and Match Group signify broader ambitions beyond crypto identity verification, demonstrating the project's potential in the broader field of finance and business.
  7. As Simo takes on a new leadership role in OpenAI and Altman confronts challenges with World, both organizations continue to make strides in advancing Artificial Intelligence, cryptocurrency, and biometric technologies.
