AI-Generated Texts Surge in UN Press Releases and Consumer Complaints
A groundbreaking study by Stanford University researchers reveals the increasing prevalence of AI-generated texts in various sectors. The report, published in the journal Patterns, shows a significant rise in AI-assisted writing, particularly in UN press releases and consumer complaints.
The study found that the proportion of AI-generated texts in UN press releases surged from 3% at the start of 2023 to over 13% by the end of 2024. This increase was likely driven by the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, with AI share in AI-assisted writing jumping from 1.5% to over 15% by August 2023.
In 2024, around 25% of corporate press releases on major US platforms were AI-generated. The use of AI tools was particularly prevalent in consumer complaint texts, with about 18% of over 687,000 complaints examined at the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) being AI-generated.
The study underscores the growing influence of AI in writing, with an average of 17% of texts in key sectors likely AI-generated. However, the researchers note that the actual figures may be higher due to limitations in AI detectors. As large language models like ChatGPT continue to evolve, the prevalence of AI-assisted writing is expected to rise further.
