Airbus Boosts Thailand's Aerial Capabilities with A330 MRTT+ Order
Airbus has announced a significant boost to Thailand's aerial capabilities with the Royal Thai Air Force's (RTAF) order of the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+). The contract, signed in 2023, will see the delivery of this advanced aircraft in 2029, following its military conversion in Spain.
The MRTT+ is an enhanced version of the A330 MRTT, featuring a host of innovations from the A330-800 commercial airliner. It will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, new aerodynamics, and wing-tips, reducing fuel burn and noise. Additionally, it will boast both boom and hose-and-drogue refuelling systems, a medical evacuation kit, and a VVIP cabin configuration.
The increased maximum take-off weight of 242 tonnes expands the MRTT+'s range and fuel offload capacity, further strengthening Thailand's defence posture and providing additional capacity for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
Airbus has also signed an expanded memorandum of understanding with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) to provide in-country maintenance for the MRTT+, extending existing cooperation on Thailand's C295 fleet.
The RTAF's acquisition of the A330 MRTT+ is set to significantly enhance Thailand's aerial capabilities. With its advanced features and increased capacity, the MRTT+ will not only bolster the country's defence but also reinforce its humanitarian and disaster relief efforts. The aircraft is expected to undergo military conversion at the A330 MRTT Centre in Getafe, Spain, beginning in 2026, with final delivery in 2029.
