Airbus Opens High-Tech Hangar in Augsburg for A321XLR Production

Airbus has opened a new, highly automated hangar in Augsburg, Germany, dedicated to producing the rear centre tank (RCT) for the A321XLR aircraft. The inauguration, attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr Markus Söder and Augsburg First Mayor Eva Weber, marks a significant step in the company's modernisation and capacity expansion efforts.

The hangar, spanning nearly 12,000 m2, includes office space and a canteen, and will employ over 250 people. It's part of Airbus' plan to ramp up production of the A320 Family to 75 aircraft per month by 2027. The new facility features state-of-the-art technologies and high digitalisation, prioritising employee ergonomics and sustainability. The RCT, with a volume of around 13,000 litres, extends the A321XLR's range by up to 8,700 kilometres. With over 500 orders for the A321XLR, the hangar will play a crucial role in meeting this news demand. The building is also designed for energy efficiency, with insulation, a grass lawn roof, and a photovoltaic system producing electricity for around 140 households annually.

The new hangar in Augsburg underscores Airbus' commitment to innovation and sustainability. It will contribute to the ramp-up of A321XLR production, supporting the growing demand for this aircraft model, while also prioritising energy efficiency and employee well-being.
