Amazon introduction of a beta program for publishing periodicals on Kindle

Amazon Kindle Publishing for Periodicals is a program launched several years ago, allowing publishers to distribute magazines, newspapers, and other regularly issued content digitally on Kindle devices and apps. This article aims to provide insight into the eligibility, supported formats, launch date, and other key aspects of this service.

To be eligible for Amazon's periodical publishing program, you typically need to be a registered publisher with regular content publication schedules. The program primarily focuses on established magazine and newspaper publishers rather than individual or casual self-publishers.

Periodicals are generally submitted in fixed-layout formats optimized for Kindle devices. Amazon uses proprietary formats based on EPUB or KF8 standards, tailored with rich media and interactive content when applicable. Each submitted application must be compatible with the supported devices to be accepted into the program.

The Amazon Kindle periodical subscription and publishing service started around 2013-2014, expanding the Kindle ecosystem beyond books to magazines and newspapers. Content can be read on Kindle devices, as well as devices with the Kindle Application, such as Blackberry, iPad, and Android devices.

Publishers must fill out a basic application form and provide URLs for their company. The application process takes two days for manual validation. Amazon has also introduced a new beta program to assist publishers in submitting their magazines to the store, including conversion tools for Amazon's proprietary ebook formats from various other formats.

Amazon uses a 70% revenue model to pay publishers per digital download. The program allows free signups and supports 5 languages. However, it's important to note that the program currently only allows submissions from USA-based publishers.

Amazon had previously promised to open up the Blogs for Kindle program to more markets five months ago, but have not done so. Similarly, Amazon has stated that they will open up other markets, but have not done so yet, specifically for this program. The delay might be due to various factors, and it's unclear if the new Apple publishing service, which is launching primarily for the iPad, will influence Amazon to speed up the process of opening up the program to more markets.

For the latest, detailed guidelines on eligibility, format requirements, and launch updates, we recommend referring to Amazon's official Kindle Direct Publishing help or media publishing sections. These resources provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding Amazon's periodical publishing program.
