The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is set to bolster its games industry with the introduction of a new video game funding programme, starting from 2025. Economy Senator Kristina Vogt announced that the initiative aims to support the development of creative concepts and prototypes in an industry with significant economic potential and cultural relevance.

The funding, amounting to up to €150,000 per year, will be primarily geared towards concept and prototype development, making it particularly attractive for small studios and teams. Eligibility extends to projects from Bremen and Lower Saxony.

To apply, interested parties must submit their applications digitally via the Nordmedia application portal on one of the three submission dates. The next opportunity will be on January 9, 2025. It is recommended to arrange for advisory meetings before submitting an application, which can be arranged immediately.

Applications will undergo a pitch before the Games Committee of the Awarding Committee, following the submission. Funding is granted based on cultural criteria, supporting the development of digital games that impart knowledge and/or cultural values, as well as originality, quality of design, degree of innovation, and the cultural economic effects in the funding area.

Nordmedia - Film and Media Company Lower Saxony/Bremen GmbH has been commissioned to handle the funding process and monitor the use of funds. The goal of the funding is to strengthen the games scene in Bremen and drive innovation forward, ultimately contributing to the city's economic growth and cultural vibrancy.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to check Bremen's official cultural or economic development websites for announcements on video game funding programmes, contact local industry associations or clusters focused on games and digital media, or look for calls for proposals or funding guidelines published by regional or national German funding bodies dedicated to creative industries or digital innovation.

The Funding program, specifically designed for the games industry in Bremen, will provide support for small studios and teams to develop innovative and original digital games, with a focus on concept and prototype development. Applications, submitable via the Nordmedia application portal, will be judged based on cultural criteria, including the imparting of knowledge and cultural values, originality, quality of design, and the cultural economic effects in the funding area.
