Hyundai to Unveil Affordable Electric Vehicle at IAA Show

Hyundai is set to reveal the Ioniq 2, a more affordable electric vehicle (EV), at the IAA show in Munich, Germany. The Ioniq 2 is expected to be a Hyundai version of the Kia EV2, a small crossover.

The Ioniq 2 is likely to use a lower-cost version of the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, which could make it more affordable compared to other EVs in the market. However, the smaller size of the Ioniq 2 may pose a challenge for the U.S. market due to 15% tariffs on Korean cars and the elimination of the federal EV tax credit. It remains unclear if Hyundai will add U.S. production of the Ioniq 2, even if it would be beneficial for EV affordability.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is continuing its EV revamp, but no specific details about its debuts at the IAA Mobility show were provided in the article. The new GLC EV, debuting at the IAA Mobility show, will have a complex grille comprised of 942 backlit dots. The GLC EV will compete with the BMW iX3, also debuting at IAA. Additionally, the GLC EV will incorporate the latest Mercedes operating system, as seen in the CLA.

On the other hand, Honda is readying its own dedicated EV platform and a new operating system called Asimo for more sophisticated driver-assist tech and an AI voice assistant. The Acura RSX Prototype, debuting during Monterey Car Week, previews Honda's first in-house EV scheduled for showrooms in the second half of 2026. The RSX is an electric crossover SUV that leverages Honda's latest technology.

The RSX will be built in Ohio alongside Honda's own 0 Series EVs, expected to include an SUV and a sedan based on the pair of vehicles Honda showed at CES 2025. The Ohio facilities will also build the Afeela 1 electric sedan for the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. The production RSX will have features wrapped in sleek styling inspired by the Acura Performance EV concept.

Critics have been harsh on Mercedes' EQ EVs, citing their inefficiency and unusual styling. In contrast, the RSX is expected to offer a more efficient and stylish alternative in the EV market. Whatever Acura shows in Monterey should be indicative of the final version of the RSX.

In conclusion, the automotive industry is gearing up for a new wave of electric vehicles, with Hyundai, Honda, and Mercedes-Benz leading the charge. The Ioniq 2, RSX, and GLC EV are just a few examples of the innovative and stylish EVs that are set to hit the market soon. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting new vehicles.
