Apple counters Musk's claim of being treated unfavorably regarding Grok
Elon Musk Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple Over App Store Practices
In a shocking turn of events, tech mogul Elon Musk has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the tech giant is disadvantaging his AI chatbot, Grok, on the App Store.
The lawsuit, filed in June 2025, claims that Apple's practices are antitrust violations. Musk argues that Apple's deep partnership with OpenAI, announced in June 2024, gives ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI chatbot, an unfair advantage. This partnership integrates ChatGPT into Apple's iOS, iPadOS, and macOS ecosystems, allowing seamless access without the need for separate app downloads.
According to Musk, this integration makes it nearly impossible for competitors like Grok to reach the top App Store rankings. As evidence, Musk points to the fact that as of August 2025, ChatGPT holds the top spot among free apps in the U.S. App Store, while Grok ranks sixth.
This lawsuit is not the first time Musk has taken legal action against a tech company. Last year, he sued OpenAI, but his case was dismissed in March. Musk accused OpenAI of deviating from its founding principles of risk-aware AI development.
Musk's feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been ongoing since ChatGPT's success late last year. Altman has dismissed Musk's claims as ironic given Musk's own alleged manipulation of his platform X (formerly Twitter).
It is worth noting that Musk was initially involved in the founding of OpenAI in 2015 but left the company in 2018. Recently, Musk's online platform X and AI chatbot Grok have both released new versions.
As of now, the lawsuit is active, with a federal judge permitting it to move forward. There is no indication yet of a resolution or settlement, and Apple has remained publicly silent on the matter.
