Aptera's Solar Electric Vehicle Passes Real-World Tests, Aims for 16,000km/Year Solar Driving

California-based mobility startup Aptera has completed real-world validation testing for its production-intent solar electric vehicle (sEV). The tests confirmed Aptera's claims of industry-leading aerodynamics and energy efficiency, bringing the company closer to full-scale production.

Aptera's sEV, developed by founder and Co-CEO Chris Anthony, was put through rigorous testing in Carlsbad, California. The tests measured the real-world energy consumption at approximately 100Wh/km, closely matching simulation models. This impressive efficiency is due in part to the vehicle's solar panels, designed to reduce reliance on external charging and generate enough energy for up to 64km of daily driving under ideal conditions. In consistently sunny climates, Aptera's sEV could equate to over 16,000km of solar-assisted driving per year.

Tuft testing results aligned with Aptera's computer simulations, allowing engineers to fine-tune the vehicle's design for even greater efficiency. In one test, Aptera's sEV took over three minutes to decelerate from 97km/h to a complete stop while travelling uphill, demonstrating exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. The coastdown distance of Aptera's sEV exceeds that of any vehicle currently in production.

With nearly 50,000 pre-orders, Aptera's sEV has garnered significant interest. The company is now developing its next validation vehicle to refine key design elements and conduct full-range tests, including real-world validation of solar charging capabilities. As Aptera moves closer to full-scale production, the automotive industry eagerly awaits the arrival of this innovative, energy-efficient vehicle.
