Automakers & Solar Firms Team Up for EVs & Clean Charging
The automotive and solar industries are converging, with automakers offering electric vehicles (EVs) and setting up battery production sites. Meanwhile, solar technology suppliers are teaming up with manufacturers to provide EVs for sale or lease. This trend will be discussed at Intersolar Europe 2018 and Power2Drive Europe.
As feed-in tariffs end, investors and plant operators are considering future electricity usage. The combination of photovoltaics (PV) and e-mobility is growing, with e-mobility driving PV market growth. In Germany, PV systems up to 10 kW are exempt from EEG levy on self-consumption, making self-generated power cheaper.
EVs are most sustainable when charged using clean power, ideally solar. A 3 kWp PV system can generate enough power for an EV to drive about 14,000 km (8,700 miles) emission-free annually. PV companies and system owners can profit from solar-powered charging stations and filling stations.
The end of 20-year feed-in tariffs in Germany is driving the combination of PV and e-mobility. Automakers and solar technology suppliers are collaborating to offer electric vehicles for sale or lease. As the market for EVs grows, so does the demand for clean, sustainable charging solutions.
