KIOXIA Unveils Next-Generation UFS 4.1 Embedded Memory Devices for Automotive Applications
KIOXIA America, Inc. has announced the launch of its new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Ver. 4.1 embedded memory devices, specifically designed for automotive applications. These devices, currently being sampled, mark a significant leap forward in flash memory technology, offering performance improvements, automotive-grade reliability, and advanced technology tailored for next-generation in-vehicle systems.
The new UFS 4.1 devices comply with the AEC-Q100/104 Grade 2 standards, ensuring reliability at high temperatures with a maximum case temperature of 115°C. They are available in capacities of 128 gigabytes (GB), 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 terabyte (TB), catering to various automotive storage needs such as infotainment, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), telematics, domain controllers, and vehicle computers.
Powered by KIOXIA's 8th generation BiCS FLASH™ 3D flash memory and proprietary controller technology, these devices enhance endurance and efficiency. Compared to the previous UFS 3.1 generation, the new UFS 4.1 devices deliver approximately 2.1 times sequential read performance, 2.5 times sequential write performance, 2.1 times random read performance, and 3.7 times random write performance. These performance gains support more responsive and data-intensive automotive applications.
The devices incorporate JEDEC's latest UFS 4.1 specifications, including enhancements like host-initiated defragmentation, replay protected memory block (RPMB) authentication for security, and increased precision in memory logical units optimized for QLC flash. They also employ MIPI Alliance’s M-PHY version 5.0 specification, providing 4.2 GB/s bandwidth, and support full-duplex operations, effectively doubling data transfer speeds compared to prior versions.
The new UFS 4.1 devices also include enhanced diagnostic capabilities, including a newly added vendor-specific device health descriptor, simplifying device status monitoring and predictive maintenance. They are engineered to meet the rigorous demands of next-generation in-vehicle systems, enabling them to handle demanding AI workloads in automotive environments, including AI for ADAS, telematics, and driver/passenger monitoring systems, by delivering high speed, reliability, and diagnostic capabilities essential for modern vehicles.
