Axiom Space & Prada Unveil AxEMU: The New Space Suit for Artemis III's Historic Moon Mission

Axiom Space, in collaboration with Prada, has developed the AxEMU, a new space suit designed to withstand extreme lunar conditions and accommodate a wider range of body types. This suit will be used in the Artemis III mission, currently scheduled for September 2026, following a lunar flyby by the Artemis II in September 2023. This will be the first manned Moon mission in over 50 years.

The AxEMU, set to enter the critical review phase in 2024, features advanced materials and textiles, along with an advanced visor coating. It includes biometric monitoring, in-suit nutrition, and a portable life support system that can sustain an astronaut for up to 8 hours. The suit also boasts advanced boots, an HD camera, 4G/LTE communication, a regenerable carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and custom-made gloves. The specific astronaut to wear this suit during the Artemis III lunar mission has not yet been announced.

The Artemis III mission, planned for September 2026, will be historic. It will be the first to reach the lunar South Pole and will also mark the first time a woman will set foot on the Moon, following the last manned mission, Apollo 17, in 1972.

The AxEMU, a collaboration between Axiom Space and Prada, is set to revolutionize space exploration. With its advanced features and ability to accommodate a wider range of body types, it paves the way for a new era of lunar exploration. The Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2026, will be a significant milestone, marking the first time humans will return to the Moon in over 50 years and the first time a woman will step on its surface.
