BMW & Figure Partner for AI, Robotics to Boost Plant Efficiency
BMW and Figure have joined forces to explore advanced manufacturing technologies like AI, robot control, and virtualization. The partnership aims to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve safety at BMW's plants, starting with its largest facility in Spartanburg.
BMW's Spartanburg plant will be the first to welcome humanoid robots from Figure. These robots will initially assess their capabilities in performing hazardous, physically demanding, or repetitive tasks. The ultimate goal is to increase efficiency and reduce strain on human workers, similar to GM's collaboration with Fanuc.
Tesla is also considering humanoid robots, with its 'Tesla Bot' under consideration for deployment in its factories. Figure's robots are not limited to the automotive industry. They are already in use in the textile industry, as seen in the partnership between Agility Robotics and GXO. Figure aims to deploy these robots across various industries to address labor shortages and perform unsafe tasks.
BMW and Figure have signed a commercial agreement to deploy general-purpose humanoid robots in BMW's manufacturing facilities. The robots will first be introduced at the Spartanburg plant, with the potential for wider adoption across the industry. This marks a significant step towards more efficient, safer, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
