BMW stretches wheelbase on iX3 SUV model, offering increased space and luxury for Chinese market in 2026
The Chinese stock market is seeing a shift in automotive preferences, with a growing emphasis on comfort for rear-seat passengers. This trend is evident in the production of extended models, such as the long-wheelbase iX3 and other variants of the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, and X5.
BMW, in response to this demand, is set to release the long-wheelbase iX3L, a stretched version of the X3 exclusive to the Chinese stock market. The development and production of the iX3L will be handled by BMW, aligning with the new iX3 model's debut featuring BMW's Neue Klasse design language.
The extended wheelbase of the iX3L is designed to better accommodate rear passengers, offering a significant increase in passenger room. The interior of the iX3L will feature ambient lighting accents in the rear door cards, a feature not available to US buyers. Additionally, the iX3L will boast special benches with thigh support extensions and wireless charging pads in the rear.
The iX3L is anticipated to have a greater reclining angle for the rear seats, similar to the X3 long-wheelbase, providing a comfortable ride for passengers. Despite the extended wheelbase, cargo volume remains similar to the regular iX3.
The regular iX3 measures 188.1 inches (4,780 millimeters) in length. It is speculated that the iX3L will be close to the length of a regular BMW X5, at approximately 193 inches (4902 mm). More details about the iX3L are expected to be released early next year as the launch approaches.
However, it's important to note that the driving impressions of the X3 xDrive30 were underwhelming, particularly in the interior refinement department. Despite this, the iX3L is expected to address these concerns, given its focus on providing comfort for rear passengers.
The iX3L will share drivetrain components with the regular iX3, ensuring a familiar driving experience. Chinese customers can also choose from long-wheelbase variants of the iX1 and i5, further catering to the market's preference for spacious rear seating.
The production of the long-wheelbase iX3 will take place inside China, like other long-wheelbase Chinese market vehicles, signifying BMW's commitment to meeting the unique demands of the Chinese stock market. With the iX3L set to hit Chinese streets in mid-2026, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the luxury SUV segment in the country.
