BSW-Solar Highlights Grid Connection Challenges for Large-Scale PV and Storage
The German Solar Association (BSW-Solar) has revealed significant challenges in connecting large-scale photovoltaic systems and storage facilities to the grid. The association is pushing for improvements, with the Bundestag set to discuss amendments to the Energy Industry Act on Thursday.
BSW-Solar's survey highlights major hurdles. Companies receive no response or rejections for 63% of planned large-scale battery storage systems, with wait times stretching until 2028. Lack of transparency over grid capacities is a key issue, with 72% of participants giving poor marks to communication with grid operators. Project developers want to combine photovoltaic open-space plants with battery storage, but face obstacles.
The association calls for digitization of connection requests, standardized deadlines, and the right to 'overbuild' connection points. Currently, it takes nearly four months just to assign a grid connection point for large photovoltaic projects. BSW-Solar demands simplified, standardized, and further digitized grid access, along with increased network transparency and binding reservation options for capacities.
The Bundestag will consider amendments to the Energy Industry Act on Thursday, aiming to address these challenges. BSW-Solar's proposals, if implemented, could significantly improve the grid connection process for large-scale photovoltaic systems and storage facilities, fostering growth in the renewable energy sector.
