NAVER CEO Appointed to United Nations Global Compact Board

In a significant development, Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of NAVER Corporation, has been appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact. This appointment marks a significant step in Choi's leadership role in international discussions on AI governance.

The United Nations Global Compact, established in July 2000, is the world's largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative, with over 25,000 companies and organizations across 167 countries. The organisation presents ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, expressed excitement about Choi's expertise in digital companies and responsible business. Ojiambo looks forward to Choi's participation on their Board as they work towards mobilizing business to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In Korea, 360 companies in the private sector are participating in the UN Global Compact. The UN Global Compact Network Korea looks forward to NAVER's active role as a global leader through ongoing collaboration with the UN Global Compact. NAVER is expected to continue leading the establishment of a sustainable management ecosystem on the global stage following Choi's appointment.

Choi's appointment recognizes her contribution in taking a leading role in international discussions to establish a safe AI ecosystem. In June 2024, NAVER introduced the AI Safety Framework (ASF), a comprehensive approach to identifying and managing potential risks across all stages of AI systems.

As a board member, CEO Choi will serve a three-year term, actively participating in regular board meetings and key UN Global Compact activities. Her attendance at the UN Global Compact Board meeting indicates her commitment to participating in key UN Global Compact activities. Choi is expected to actively participate in transnational discussions on establishing ethical AI governance on the global stage.

Lee Dong-Kurn, President of the UN Global Compact Network Korea, expressed delight about Choi's appointment as a UN Global Compact board member, the first Korean in 17 years. At the AI Action Summit held in Paris in February 2025, she joined global leaders to discuss the future direction of AI development.

CEO Choi Soo-yeon will attend the upcoming UN Global Compact Board meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 20 (U.S. local time). The UN Global Compact Network Korea anticipates Choi's contributions to the organization's efforts in mobilizing business to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In addition to her role at NAVER, Choi has established NAVER Ventures in Silicon Valley, building a collaborative ecosystem by identifying and supporting promising startups across diverse nationalities and sectors. Her appointment as a UN Global Compact board member further solidifies her position as a global leader in AI governance and sustainable business practices.
