A significant power outage hit Pune's Hinjewadi IT Park and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The disruption was caused by a fault in a 220 kV underground high-voltage cable between the Infosys and Pegasus substations.

The outage affected over 12,000 low-tension residential consumers and 91 high-tension industrial consumers, including major IT firms like Infosys and Nextra, as well as key industrial zones in MIDC and Hinjawadi phases 1, 2, and 3.

Partial power supply has been restored for residential areas through alternate lines, with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) working to divert power to ease the crisis. However, industrial power supply (high-tension) remains cut off as of the morning of Monday, July 7, 2025.

Officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MahaTransco/MSETCL) have indicated that the repair of the damaged 220 kV underground cable is extensive and is expected to take up to three days. Consequently, full restoration of power for industrial consumers is likely by Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Residents in Hinjewadi have expressed frustration over the prolonged outage, affecting their work-from-home schedules and daily routines. Santosh Thakur, a resident, mentioned that there has been no power since 11 am, and the outage is the longest they've experienced. Usually, outages in the area are short and planned, according to Thakur.

Rajiv Ranjan, another resident of Hinjewadi, stated that they faced a power cut in the afternoon and haven't received any updates for hours. Somnath Munde, executive engineer, MSEDCL Pimpri division, made the statement about power restoration.

The affected areas include MIDC, parts of the IT Park, Raisoni Park, Dohler Company, and the Wipro Circle zone. More than 63 MW of power load is being diverted via other channels to mitigate the impact of the power outage.

Authorities have urged affected businesses and residents to remain patient while repair teams work to resolve the fault as soon as possible. This outage is one of the most significant disruptions in recent years for Pune's IT and industrial sectors, causing operational challenges and urging contingencies like backup power or work-from-home arrangements.

Thankfully, today is a holiday, so the power outage hasn't affected Santosh Thakur's work-from-home setup. The extended repair duration may cause inconvenience for businesses, but the cooperation of all parties is crucial to ensure a swift resolution to the issue.

Despite the power outage affecting various businesses and residents, including major IT firms and key industrial zones, no impact was seen on Santosh Thakur's work-from-home setup as today is a holiday. With the repair of the damaged cable expected to take up to three days, the integration of cricket tournaments, normally streamed online or on television, might face disruptions due to the technology-dependent nature of the sport.
