Canada Moves Forward with Modern Submarine Fleet: Hanwha Ocean Shortlisted
The Canadian government has taken a significant step towards modernising its submarine fleet. The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) aims to replace the ageing Victoria-class with a new fleet capable of operating across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic. Hanwha Ocean, a South Korean shipbuilder, has been shortlisted as a qualified supplier, teaming up with Babcock Canada to provide up to 12 new submarines.
Hanwha Ocean can deliver the first KSS-III variant in six years from contract award, with one submarine to follow each year thereafter. This timeline aligns with the CPSP's goal of having the first four submarines delivered by 2035. Babcock Canada, which leads Canada's submarine sustainment enterprise, will serve as Hanwha Ocean’s exclusive in-service support partner. Tony March, CEO of Babcock Canada, sees this agreement as strengthening the relationship with Hanwha Ocean. Steve Jeong, Hanwha Ocean's head of naval ship global business, believes the partnership offers Canada the lowest risk and most reliable solution.
The CPSP aims to acquire up to 12 new submarines, with the first four expected by 2035. Hanwha Ocean, with its extensive design and construction expertise, and Babcock Canada, with its leadership in submarine sustainment, have joined forces to provide a modern fleet capable of operating in various challenging environments.
