Canada's Solar Boom: Behind-the-Meter Installations Surge

Canada's solar energy sector is booming, with a surge in behind-the-meter installations and new projects coming online. Despite a lack of specific provincial data, Alberta and Ontario are leading the charge, driven by favorable policies, rising power bills, and energy supply concerns.

In the first half of 2025, Alberta installed 43 MW of behind-the-meter solar capacity and 5 MW of distributed generation. This significant growth is part of Canada's broader trend, which is set to exceed the 314 MW deployed in 2024. While the leading province for these installations remains unknown, Alberta's numbers are impressive.

Ontario, previously resistant to renewables, is now showing increased interest in solar due to energy supply concerns. A 112 MW solar project near Edmonton International Airport is expected to come online later this year, further boosting Canada's solar capacity.

Favorable policies and financing, such as investment tax credits, are driving this growth. The country has a total solar capacity of 6 GW, part of its 24 GW combined wind and solar capacity. More than 10 GW of renewable energy procurement is scheduled in the coming years, indicating a bright future for solar in Canada. Rising power bills due to aging infrastructure and climate change are also pushing behind-the-meter solar adoption.

Canada's solar energy sector is thriving, with behind-the-meter installations having an active year. Despite Ontario's historical resistance, it is now embracing solar due to energy supply concerns. With favorable policies, rising power bills, and a shortage of energy supply driving demand, Canada is on track to significantly increase its solar capacity in the coming years.
