In the world of music education, five exceptional initiatives have been shortlisted for the 'Best Music Learning Initiative' category at the 2024 Music Teacher of the Year Awards with ABRSM. These programmes, each unique in their approach, aim to inspire, educate, and empower young minds.
First on the list is Rap Therapy, an innovative programme that uses rap as a tool to foster mental health, creativity, and transferable skills like communication and expression among students. Through unique rap-based activities, mentorship, and practical applications, Rap Therapy equips students with the skills they need to thrive in various aspects of life.
The nominations also include the Benedetti Foundation, an organisation that focuses on interactive and fun string workshops for young people. The workshops aim to make learning an instrument enjoyable and accessible, fostering a love for music in the next generation.
Bratton Brass Roots, a children's beginner brass band, stems from the long-lasting community tradition of brass bands. This fun and supportive group is affordable to families, making the joy of music accessible to all.
Another nominee is Band in a Van, led by the Alina Orchestra. This series of interactive events takes place at local libraries and family and children's centres, bringing classical music to young people in a fun and inspiring way.
Last but not least, Sounding Out is an initiative that provides lessons in orchestral instruments without the barrier of cost to children at all Canterbury city primary schools. By removing financial obstacles, Sounding Out aims to reverse the decline in classical tuition among young people.
Voting for the 2024 winner of the 'Best Music Learning Initiative' is now open. The panel of judges and music industry experts have made their decisions, but it's up to the public to choose the winner.
