CATL Unveils Shenxing: 10-Minute Charge for 400km EV Range
Chinese battery giant CATL has unveiled Shenxing, a revolutionary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery promising a 10-minute charge for 400 kilometers of driving range. Mass production is set to begin by the end of 2023, with Shenxing-equipped EVs hitting the market in early 2024.
CATL's Shenxing is the world's first 4C super fast-charging LFP battery, capable of charging from 10 to 80% in about 11.5 minutes. This significant improvement addresses the slow charging speeds that have hindered EV adoption. Shenxing's innovations include nano-crystalline cathode material and advanced anode coatings, enhancing both speed and safety.
CATL aims to boost three key aspects of EV batteries with Shenxing: charging speed, range, and safety. The technology is already in use in models like the Zeekr 001 and will be available to Chinese car manufacturers from early 2024. European production is in preparation, with a showcase planned at IAA Mobility in Munich in September 2025. CATL is also exploring battery manufacturing and EV sector investments in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Thailand.
The introduction of Shenxing is expected to contribute to broader EV adoption, potentially propelling electric vehicles into the mainstream. With Shenxing-equipped EVs able to recharge on long road trips in a similar time to refueling gasoline vehicles, this technology could significantly reduce one of the major barriers to EV adoption. CATL, the largest global supplier of EV batteries with clients like BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Tesla, is at the forefront of this exciting development.
