China Approves Eight Entities to Offer Large Language Model Products
Chinese authorities have approved eight entities to offer large language model (LLM) products for public use. The move follows a year-long review process and comes after the introduction of an administrative framework for generative AI services in April 2023.
The approved entities include Baidu, Douyin Group, Zhipu AI, Baichuan AI, Institute of Automation at Chinese Academy of Sciences, SenseTime, MiniMax, and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Among these, Baidu's Ernie Bot is China's first generative AI product developed by a Chinese tech company and the world's first of its kind from a major conglomerate. It became available for download immediately after the announcement, with other approved entities like SenseTime also making their LLM products public soon after.
Douyin Group's Doubao AI chatbot, built on the proprietary Yunque LLM, started external testing on August 17, 2023. Zhipu AI, established in 2019, has released products like GLM-130B, ChatGLM-6B, CodeGeeX, and CogView, and is collaborating with Chinese internet giants and state-backed enterprises.
The approved entities now have the privilege of prioritizing AI product launches and gaining a first-mover advantage in the Chinese market. The approvals come after the Cyberspace Administration of China disclosed details about the filing of deep synthesis service algorithms on June 20, 2023, including Baidu's Ernie Bot.
