China's Space Ambitions Grow With Successful In-Orbit Refueling and Reusable Rocket Pursuit
China has made significant strides in space technology, recently conducting an in-orbit refueling operation in the geostationary belt. This achievement comes amidst growing concerns about the country's pursuit of reusable orbital rockets and its expanding presence in medium Earth orbit.
The 'Redshift' report from the Commercial Space Federation warns that China's expanding commercial and civil space sector poses a significant challenge to U.S. leadership in space. U.S. military officials share this concern, warning that China's progress in reusable rocket technology could erode the U.S. lead and reshape the strategic balance in orbit.
China's recent launch of Yaogan 45, a remote sensing satellite, into medium Earth orbit, previously dominated by the U.S., is a testament to its expanding presence. This year alone, China has launched about five TJS satellites into orbit, an unusually high number. The U.S. Space Force is tracking these satellites, believed to be used for military purposes such as electronic intelligence and missile warning.
Chinese companies are actively working on reusable rockets. State-backed China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) plans a fully reusable heavy-lift rocket based on the Starship design for the 2040s. Several private Chinese firms have also conducted dozens of launches in recent years, aiming to develop reusable rocket technology. Once China reaches the threshold of reusable lift, it could rapidly deploy commercial and military satellites, potentially reducing the U.S. lead.
China's progress in space technology, particularly its pursuit of reusable orbital rockets and expansion into medium Earth orbit, is a cause for concern. As China continues to advance its space capabilities, the U.S. and other nations must monitor these developments closely and consider their own strategies to maintain a competitive edge in space.
