Collaboration between Wingd and CMB.TECH Results in Development of Sizable Ammonia-Fueled Propulsion Systems
WinGD and CMB.TECH Announce Collaboration on Ammonia-Powered Engines for Bulk Carriers
In a significant move towards a zero-carbon future, WinGD and CMB.TECH have announced a partnership to co-develop ammonia-fuelled two-stroke engines. The project, announced on January 31, 2023, marks a significant step in accelerating WinGD's ammonia technology roadmap.
The new engines, part of WinGD's X-DF portfolio, will be based on the proven technology of WinGD's X engines and the X92B engine in particular. Known for its market-leading fuel efficiency, the X92B engine will form the basis for the development of large bore ammonia-fuelled engines.
CMB.TECH, with its significant insight into alternative fuels, will provide invaluable expertise to the engine development project. The company builds, designs, owns, and operates marine and industrial applications that run on hydrogen and ammonia.
Alexander Saverys, CMB CEO, believes that ammonia is the most promising zero-carbon fuel for deep sea vessels. He stated, "We are excited to be working with WinGD on this project. Ammonia has the potential to revolutionise the maritime industry and we believe it is the key to achieving long-term decarbonisation targets."
The development project with CMB.TECH is one of several projects WinGD is carrying out to ensure that dual-fuel ammonia two-stroke engines will be available as the global fleet prepares to adopt green fuels.
In a groundbreaking move, a series of 10 bulk cargo ships of 210,000 DWT, equipped with WinGD's developed ammonia-powered two-stroke engines, will be built by the Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in 2025 and 2026. These ships will be the first of their kind, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry's move towards greener, more sustainable fuel sources.
Klaus Heim, CEO of WinGD, views the project as a significant step in WinGD's ammonia technology roadmap. He stated, "We are thrilled to be working with CMB.TECH on this project. The development of ammonia-fuelled engines is a crucial step towards a zero-carbon future for the maritime industry."
The partnership between WinGD and CMB.TECH aims to extend beyond bulk carriers, with the goal of having dual-fuel ammonia-diesel engines on CMB's dry bulk vessels, container vessels, and chemical tankers. The carriers will be built at a Chinese shipyard in 2025 and 2026.
The newest engines in WinGD's X-DF portfolio will incorporate ammonia capability to the proven technology of WinGD's X engines. Both WinGD and CMB.TECH believe that ammonia can play a significant role in the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. This collaboration is a testament to their shared commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for the maritime industry.
