The universities in Brandenburg, Germany, have joined forces in a five-year project aimed at enhancing cybersecurity efforts and protecting against the ever-increasing threat from cybercriminals. Led by the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, eight universities in the region will collaborate to improve IT security standards.

The project, funded by the Center for Digital Transformation of Brandenburg Universities until 2029 with approximately 2.7 million euros, aims to meet recognized IT security standards. Key components of the project include providing free academic access to industrial-grade hardware security technologies, fostering open innovation, building cybersecurity expertise, and linking research with industrial partners and policy frameworks.

One of the project's significant aspects is the provision of free academic access to advanced hardware security technologies. This includes eMemory’s NeoFuse OTP (One-Time Programmable memory) and PUFsecurity’s Physically Unclonable Function (PUF)-based Root of Trust components. These technologies enable secure boot, hardware identity, key management, and attestation—critical elements in hardened IT security designs.

By removing proprietary barriers to hardware security technologies, academic researchers can develop and prototype real-world secure systems beyond theoretical models. This promotes open innovation and trustable hardware design practices through collaborative efforts among universities and research institutes.

The project also focuses on building cybersecurity expertise within Brandenburg's universities. Institutions such as the Brandenburg University of Technology and the University of Potsdam, which are part of broader initiatives to enhance digital sciences education and research including AI, will benefit from enhanced study programs and international cooperation. This will support the development of skilled professionals specialized in cybersecurity.

In addition to technology access and educational enrichment, the project also emphasizes strategic partnerships. Linking research with industrial partners and policy frameworks ensures that technology development aligns with practical cybersecurity needs, including plans for AI gigafactories and expanding computing infrastructure that integrate robust security foundations.

The project was announced with the intent to better protect the universities from cyber-attacks. Planned measures for the project include training, emergency exercises, and technical measures to strengthen cybersecurity standards and embed trusted hardware security features into future IT systems. The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, the Film University Babelsberg, the universities in Eberswalde, Brandenburg an der Havel, Wildau, and the University of Potsdam are all part of the collaboration.

Experts agree that the collaboration among Brandenburg universities will significantly improve IT security standards and protect against cybercrime. By fostering a collaborative ecosystem, these universities are demonstrating their commitment to maintaining a high level of information security, making them trusted partners for the economy.
