In the picturesque city of Gelendzhik, located on the shores of the Black Sea, a modernization project is underway, aiming to enhance public safety and security. The city council has approved the allocation of 32 million rubles from the local budget to fund the installation of 642 high-resolution cameras in public areas.

These cameras will not only capture footage but will also have the ability to identify vehicle license plates in real-time, as well as recognize faces, making them a significant step forward in the city's video surveillance system. The project is part of a larger-scale program in the Krasnodar region, positioning Gelendzhik as one of the most advanced cities in the region in terms of surveillance technology.

The head of Gelendzhik's administration, Alexei Bogodistov, stated that the cameras will help in quick identification and apprehension of individuals violating public order. This innovative system is expected to increase efficiency in detecting and apprehending offenders, contributing to a safer environment for both residents and visitors.

While the specific details of Gelendzhik's system are not yet fully available, it is worth noting that similar systems, such as the well-known Russian facial recognition and video surveillance system 'Kupol', have been operating in cities like Moscow for several years. Kupol is renowned for its high accuracy and extensive deployment in urban areas for law enforcement monitoring. However, a direct comparison between Gelendzhik's system and Kupol, in terms of recognition accuracy, false positive rates, data security, and operational scale, is yet to be made.

The effectiveness of such systems generally depends on factors such as the scale (number of cameras, data processing units), AI capability for facial detection and matching, and integration with law enforcement databases. The cost, on the other hand, depends on hardware, software licenses, installation, maintenance, and data storage infrastructure.

As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how Gelendzhik's advanced video surveillance system unfolds and contributes to the city's safety. The system, once fully operational, could potentially serve as a model for other cities in the region and beyond, further advancing Russia's efforts in automation and tech sovereignty.
