COP28 Begins: Can Dubai's Climate Conference Drive Net-Zero by 2050?
COP28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, commences in Dubai on Thursday, led by Sultan al-Jaber, CEO of both Adnoc and Masdar. The conference aims to address concerns about hosting a climate event in a petro-state and push for net-zero emissions by 2050.
The conference, chaired by al-Jaber, seeks to strengthen Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and accelerate net-zero targets. This could lead to stricter EU and national regulations, impacting the automotive sector, including fleet suppliers and customers. The global stocktake at COP28 will assess progress towards NDCs, with the aim of setting more ambitious targets.
Despite global emissions not peaking, there are signs of progress. The cost of renewable energy is decreasing, and electric vehicle (EV) adoption is increasing. A positive outcome at COP28 could tighten regulations, accelerating the transition to net-zero emissions. The conference should also establish clearer rules for carbon credit markets to enhance their value and growth.
COP28 must demonstrate its commitment to reducing emissions by decreasing the exploitation of fossil fuels. The UAE, hosting the event, has shown commitment through innovative mobility projects. Meanwhile, developed nations are close to fulfilling the $100 billion commitment for climate change mitigation and adaptation, with negotiations for a new amount starting at COP28.
