In a recent development, gaming retailer GameStop has agreed to a $4.5 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed by Alejandro Aldana and Scott Gallie, who accused the company of violating the Video Privacy Protection Act. The lawsuit alleged that GameStop shared customers' personally identifiable information with Facebook without consent, specifically through the Facebook Tracking Pixel on its website.

The settlement does not affect GameStop's financial performance or future business operations, and the company has denied any wrongdoing, stating that they agreed to the settlement to avoid uncertainties and expenses. However, they have agreed to suspend the Facebook tracking pixel on their website as part of the settlement.

Customers who bought a game from GameStop's website between August 18, 2020, and April 17, 2025, and have a public Facebook account displaying the name used at the time of purchase, can qualify for compensation. Each eligible class member can receive either a cash payment (up to $5) or a store voucher (up to $10), but not both.

Eligible customers should have received an email with a 10-character Unique ID needed to file a claim. To submit a claim, customers need to visit the official settlement website and fill out the claim form with their full name, address, email, phone number, and proof of ownership of a Facebook account. Proof of ownership can be provided through a link or screenshot of the profile.

The deadline to submit a claim is August 15, 2025. It's important to note that this settlement is not related to GameStop's recent decision to add Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset.
