Customizable calling cards now being implemented for contacts on Google Phones
In a significant step towards enhancing the user experience, Google has rolled out its new feature, Calling Cards, for the Google Phone and Contacts apps. This feature, currently in beta testing, is now becoming widely available for general users on recent app versions as of August 2025.
The Calling Cards feature allows users to assign a full-screen, customizable calling card for each contact, which appears when that contact calls. This replaces the traditional small circular profile picture on the incoming call screen with a full-screen background image and styled text.
Customization options for Calling Cards are extensive. Users can choose a photo from their gallery, Google Photos, or directly take a new picture for the contact’s calling card. The positioning of the image on the screen can be adjusted, and the font type and color used for the contact’s name displayed prominently on the incoming call screen can be customized. The font color palette includes a wide range of colors such as Autumn Orange, Navy, Vivid Cyan, Red, Lavender, and a "Smart Color" option that likely picks a color from the chosen image.
Unlike Apple's Contact Posters, Google's Calling Cards only affect how contacts appear on your device during incoming calls; you cannot create a universal calling card profile visible to others. However, the Contacts app has adopted Material 3 Expressive design elements alongside this feature's rollout, enhancing the overall visual appeal.
The Google Phone app codenames this feature "patrick." After selecting an image, users can adjust its position and choose a font and color for the name that appears near the top of the Incoming Call screen. Calling cards will allow users to have a full-screen image as the background on the Incoming Call screen.
In addition to Calling Cards, the Google Phone app is also preparing the 'Take a Message' live voicemail capability, which is currently in beta testing. The upcoming Horizontal swipe or Single tap gesture for answering calls is related to this feature.
Google Phone for Wear OS is also getting M3 Expressive, aligning with the design changes in the main apps. As with any new feature, the rollout will continue to expand, and users are encouraged to keep their apps updated to experience these enhancements.
