Western Digital Recovers from March Cyberattack

Western Digital, a leading manufacturer of data storage solutions, has largely recovered from a cyberattack that occurred in March. The attack, carried out by the hacker group Lapsus$, did not significantly affect the company's earnings for the fiscal quarter ended March 31.

The data breach resulted in customer data being accessed, prompting Western Digital to notify customers and government authorities about the incident. The company has been conducting a forensic investigation into the attack and is coordinating with law enforcement authorities.

In the aftermath of the attack, Western Digital's systems and services were affected, causing customers to be unable to access My Cloud Home and related services until the middle of April. However, the company's CEO, David Goeckeler, praised the company's response during a quarterly conference call, stating that most of the affected systems and services are now back online.

The expenses related to the cyberattack include costs for forensics, third-party consulting, outside legal advisors, and other IT professionals. Western Digital has been filing these expenses with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company also has cyber insurance coverage, subject to certain deductibles and limitations.

Western Digital's online store is expected to be back up within the next week, according to Goeckeler. The ransomware group Alphv/BlackCat claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to leak company data, but it is unclear if any data has been leaked so far.

Despite the challenges posed by the cyberattack, Western Digital has largely recovered, and the company continues to operate normally. The company filed a report about the cyberattack with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week, providing more details about the incident and the company's response.

As Western Digital continues to investigate and remediate the effects of the cyberattack, the company remains committed to protecting the privacy and security of its customers' data. The company will continue to work closely with law enforcement authorities and cybersecurity experts to ensure the safety and security of its systems and services.
