Mexico's Data Center Boom: A New Era of Growth with 5G

Mexico is preparing for a significant leap in data center growth, driven by the deployment of 5G technology. This new stage of development is expected to bring about transformative changes, particularly in the realm of data management and storage.

One of the key players in this advancement is Huawei, which has announced plans to invest US$300 million in Mexico by 2025. This investment is likely to bolster the country's data center infrastructure and contribute to the overall digital transformation.

The growth of hybrid cloud data center installations in Latin America, including Mexico, was a robust 27% in 2020. This surge was primarily due to the increasing adoption of colocation, service providers, and large data center installations.

Queretaro, a city in Mexico, has already seen substantial investment in the data center segment, amounting to over 1,600 million dollars. Microsoft has also joined the fray, announcing an investment of over one billion dollars for a data center in Queretaro. This investment includes $600 million for Cloud and over 100 million dollars for IoData.

Querétaro's appeal lies in its excellent fiber optic infrastructure, strategic location, and safety, making it a nerve center for data centers. Several global technology firms, including Microsoft, have invested in setting up data centers in the city, with more investments expected due to the growing demand for data infrastructure in the region.

Data centers cater to a wide range of entities, from small companies with a website to large corporations with a robust infrastructure. They are vital for various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, food and beverage, enabling tasks like banking transactions, web browsing, and app promotion.

In Latin America, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia stand out as significant markets for data centers. Among the verticals growing significantly in Mexico and Latin America are finance, retail, and education. The entertainment industry, too, requires data centers that are more 'consolidated and close to users and distributors.'

The hybrid cloud is expected to present high relevance in the short term, and the issue of data centers will be paramount for Smart Cities, especially for electric or autonomous vehicles that need real-time decision making. It is estimated that there will be a 30% growth in Edge-level data centers worldwide in the coming years, and this growth will be even more dramatic with the arrival of 5G networks and Smart Cities.

The best colocation service providers are essential for data centers, ensuring seamless operations and optimal performance. In the colocation segment, there are 146 data centers in Latin America, 33 in Central America, and 11 very large in Mexico.

As the demand for data infrastructure continues to grow, it's clear that Mexico is poised to become a major player in the global data center landscape. With its strategic location, robust infrastructure, and growing investments, the country is well on its way to establishing itself as a hub for data centers in Latin America.
