Debut of the Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX - An Orange Revolution in Automotive Design

By Patrick Broich, Affalterbach

Get ready for a mind-blowing ride! Yesterday, that was the vibe in Affalterbach, a humble town of fewer than 5,000 residents, for a reason only AMG enthusiasts could fathom. With banners proudly displaying "Affalterbach," the streets surrounding Mercedes-AMG headquarters transformed into a vibrant party scene, attracting hundreds, even thousands of curious visitors. The air was buzzing with anticipation, and a camouflaged sedan sneaking through hinted at something big - the Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX.

A visual spectacle like no other, the GT XX is more than just superlative - it's a game-changer with revolutionary electromobility technology. It's time to redefine what's possible!

A Dazzling Display of Efficiency and Power

This isn't your everyday car show. The GT XX, adorned in vibrant orange and boasting C111 design nods, seamlessly merges futuristic ideas with everyday practicality. Push the boundaries of innovation with active aerowheels adorning bleeding-edge tech like dynamically moving blades optimizing for air resistance reduction or brake cooling. Exciting, isn't it? But keep in mind, this level of sophisticated flourish might not make it to production for cost reasons.

Electric Motors on Steroids

By 2026, it's a done deal. The so-called axial flux motors, developed in collaboration with Yasa, will grace series production. Why the buzz? These motors are way lighter and more efficient than their predecessors, offering outstanding power density. By reducing the electromagnetic flux's angle in relation to the axis of rotation, we're looking at an impressive threefold increase in power density compared to traditional electric motors. Simply put, that means more power in less space!

Moreover, these single-speed electric motors are oil-cooled, offering optimum thermal management, and are equipped with a continuous power rating suitable for this supersports car's strengths. Get excited because the GT XX boasts an awe-inspiring 1,341 horsepower produced by three axial flux motors. With a top speed exceeding 223 mph, hockey sticks would be in awe!

Charging, Redefined

No more vision boards or tall tales from car manufacturers around the world. AMG is setting the bar high by revolutionizing charging speeds. Technology enthusiasts, buckle up! Newly developed cylindrical cells with a high, narrow format allow for superior cooling efficiency due to the small distance between the core and the surface, with each cell individually cooled by special oil for optimal performance. Marvel at the impressive 850 kW charging power, a dream become reality, or is it? The Swabians have already developed a charger by Alpitronic that facilitates such immense current through a standard CCS cable, paving the way for rapid chargers in the when-it-hits-the-market AMG.EA vehicle. But who knows, the numbers might deviate from the study.

Now, imagine charging your vehicle for five minutes and having enough juice for 400 kilometers. Groundbreaking, right? That's the absolute game-changer in electromobility, making charging a breeze, almost like refueling - heaven, you say?

The GT XX boasts an impressive 3,000 cells in its battery pack, but the tech nerds are keeping mum on specifics for now.

Daydreaming for a Bit

Jump inside the GT XX's bucket seats, made from recycled tires, sink comfortably into the carbon-fiber backrests, and gaze upon a sea of displays. Cradling the steering wheel that bears a striking resemblance to the AMG One hypercar, you'll wish the daydreaming never ends. Though any hope of experiencing the sensational fluid panel in the rear area incorporating dynamic visual messages in reality is a lost cause, as it's been deemed too far-fetched for production. LED-trimmed radiator grilles, however, seem more promising.

With the GT XX, Mercedes targets stimulating our brains in multiple ways. Its vision for record-breaking charging speeds, a potent powertrain, and a cutting-edge battery system underline its commitment to electromobility and sets the stage for the debut of the first AMG.EA series model next year. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest updates and prepare yourselves for an ultra-performance electrified future!
