Dedication to Esports Tournaments
Long Beach City College (LBCC) has taken a significant step forward in the world of esports with the opening of its new E-Sports Lab. Located on the college's campus in Southern California, this innovative space is set to offer students a wealth of opportunities in the rapidly growing esports industry.
The lab, which soft-opened to LBCC students during the Fall 2024 semester, was conceptualized by Chris Greenwood and Mayra Aguilar. It was built meticulously between March and July 2024, with a total investment of $2.3 million.
The lab is equipped with 47 Alienware gaming stations and five teaching stations, ensuring that students have ample resources to hone their skills. To reduce visual fatigue during gaming sessions, the lab features an optimized lighting system. Five tracking PTZ cameras cover the players, providing a comprehensive view of the action, while seven 75-inch 4K displays, two 65-inch displays, a 75-inch display, and a 55-inch display offer crystal-clear visuals.
The lab's AV content is streamed through its standard 1 Gbps Ethernet switches, thanks to Extron NAV E 101, NAV E 121, and NAV E 401 D encoders. The Extron MGP 641 xi multi-window processors, daisy-chained, allow up to eight source windows to be seen on any display. This cutting-edge technology simplifies the lab's wiring and AV installation, thanks to the PoE capability of the Extron components.
Esports at LBCC creates an inclusive environment that enables students from diverse backgrounds to participate and excel. It is classified as a sport at LBCC, aiding skills development in communication, leadership, teamwork, and strategic thinking. The lab also boasts a fully equipped shoutcaster production booth for live broadcasting of esports competitions.
The demand for esports classes is strong among LBCC students, making the lab a real boost to the community college. Students can gain experience in various aspects of the esports industry, such as competitive gameplay, esports media, and organisational roles within the program. Participation in LBCC's esports tournaments has led to students being offered scholarships to four-year universities and careers in technology, broadcasting, and game development.
In addition to competitive play, students can also engage in esports media classes or camps, such as the LBCC Esports Media Camp. These activities cover broadcasting, content creation, and production around esports events. The lab's potential integration of esports-related content into broader educational technology and media courses, supported by LBCC’s Online Learning & Educational Technology (OLET) department, further enhances the learning experience.
The LBCC E-Sports Lab is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of esports education and career opportunities for students. With a wide range of opportunities available, from professional or semi-professional esports athlete roles to careers in esports broadcasting, media production, marketing, and event management, as well as roles in game design, game analytics, or technology support for esports organisations, the possibilities are endless.
Students interested in esports at LBCC should explore joining the Vikings Esports team, enrolling in esports media or related technology classes, and participating in summer camps like the Esports Media Camp to build relevant skills and experience.
