Denmark deploys automated submarines for patrols in the Baltic and Northern Seas.
Unmanned Ships Patrol Danish & NATO Waters
- joins the discussion*
Denmark has put two self-sailing vessels, created by US company Saildrone, into service to boost surveillance in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, as per Danish officials and the company.
Denmark's deployment of these unmanned ships, famously known as "Voyagers," comes at a crucial time when tensions rise and concerns about potential sabotage linger following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
These 10-meter long, wind and solar-powered vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art sensor suites, including radar, infrared and optical cameras, sonar, and acoustic monitoring equipment. This arsenal allows the Voyagers to gather comprehensive data both above and below the sea surface, providing an invaluable boost to maritime monitoring and security.
The Voyagers harness the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence to provide an accurate snapshot of the maritime environment within a radius of approximately 20-30 miles (30-50 kilometers) in open ocean. Essentially, these drones serve as sensor-filled "trucks" for naval surveillance, aiding significantly in maintaining vigilance over strategically important waters.
Although Denmark recently started a three-month operational trial with these drones to enhance situational awareness, the future of autonomous maritime surveillance looks promising indeed. So, buckle up and keep an eye on the horizon!
