Djibouti Signs MoU with Visa to Boost Digital Economy and Financial Inclusion

The Republic of Djibouti has taken a significant step forward in its digital transformation journey by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global payment technology company Visa. This partnership, which is part of Djibouti's broader digital transformation agenda, was initiated under the #Smart_Nation roadmap and reflects the country's commitment to advancing smart governance systems and expanding financial inclusion.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by high-level delegations from Visa and Tech5, led by their respective senior executives. The CEO of Tech5, Machiel van der Harst, was present, as was the Vice-President and Regional Manager of Government Solutions for the CEMEA zone at Visa. Tech5's Chief Executive Officer and Vice-President for the Middle East and Africa were also part of the delegation.

The Ministry Delegate in charge of Digital Economy and Innovation (MDENI) of Djibouti, Minister Mariam Hamadou Ali, emphasized that this MoU with Visa is a significant step in accelerating Djibouti's national digital transformation. The partnership aims to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through technology-driven innovation and inclusive digital services.

The National Digital Wallet project, which is set to launch soon and is known as #Smart_Wallet, is a key component of this partnership. The project aims to provide citizens, entrepreneurs, and residents with secure access to public services, digital payments, and digital identity solutions. This initiative aligns with Djibouti's focus on advancing smart governance systems and expanding financial inclusion.

Minister Ali stated, "This partnership with Visa is a testament to our commitment to building a sustainable digital economy. We are excited about the opportunities this collaboration will bring, and we look forward to working together to achieve our shared goals."

The partnership between Djibouti and Visa also supports the Republic of Djibouti's efforts to expand financial inclusion. The forthcoming launch of the National Digital Wallet project is expected to play a crucial role in this regard.
