VinFast Opens Electric Vehicle Plant in Tamil Nadu, India

VinFast, the Vietnamese automobile company, has officially inaugurated its electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. The plant, spanning over 400 acres, is VinFast's third operational plant and the fifth project in its global manufacturing network.

The Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M K Stalin, graced the grand opening ceremony of the plant. The inauguration marks a major step in VinFast's global expansion and reinforces the company's long-term commitment to India's automobile market.

In its initial phase, the plant will focus on assembling two premium electric SUV models: the VF 7 and VF 6. These models are part of VinFast's extensive product lineup, which also includes a wide range of electric SUVs, e-scooters, and e-buses.

The project represents a phased investment of about Rs. 16,000 crore (US$ 1.83 billion), with Rs. 4,300 crore (US$ 490 million) spent in the first phase. At full capacity, the facility is expected to generate 3,000–3,500 direct jobs and numerous indirect jobs within the local supply chain.

VinFast aims to establish Thoothukudi as an export hub and the "EV capital of South Asia," supporting markets in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This expansion aligns with VinFast's broader plans to sell 200,000 vehicles worldwide in 2025 and increase annual production to 1 million EVs by 2030.

The plant includes modern, automated body, paint, assembly, logistics, and quality control units. Local supply chain localization and technology transfer efforts are underway to promote sustainable growth in India's green industrial development.

In a statement, Mr. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, stated that the Tamil Nadu plant marks a strategic milestone in VinFast's long-term commitment to the Indian market. The plant will expand its production capacity to meet rising demand and develop into VinFast's largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

VinFast has partnered with multiple dealer groups in key cities and teamed up with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure to build a robust digital services and after-sales support network. The company has also joined forces with BatX Energies to enable battery recovery and reuse, advancing circular production and sustainable development in the world's third-largest automobile market.

The VinFast Thoothukudi plant is operational with a current capacity of 50,000 EVs annually, with growth plans to ramp up production to 150,000 units per year as part of VinFast's strategic regional expansion. The Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M K Stalin, signed the first VF7 premium SUV that rolled out from the assembly line of VinFast India plant, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in India's electric vehicle industry.
