Elon Musk's former collaborator in xAI heads off to establish a venture capital company concentrating on artificial intelligence.

In a recent development, Igor Babuschkin, a renowned figure in the AI industry, has announced the launch of his own venture capital firm, Babuschkin Ventures. This new venture aims to focus on AI safety research and funding startups that advance humanity through safe and beneficial AI systems.

Babuschkin, who was a co-founder of xAI, a leading AI model development company in Silicon Valley, has been a key figure in building xAI to its current standing. His departure from the company was announced recently, with a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter).

The inspiration for Babuschkin Ventures reportedly came from a dinner with Max Tegmark, founder of the Future of Life Institute. Babuschkin, in his post, expressed his immense love for the xAI team, describing them as the most dedicated people he's ever worked with. He compared his feelings to that of a proud parent sending their child to college, signifying the end of an era but also the beginning of a new one.

Catching up to the AI frontier quickly at xAI was challenging, but achievable due to the team's "diehard grit and spirit." During his time at xAI, Babuschkin learned two priceless lessons from Elon Musk: be fearless in addressing technical problems and have a maniacal sense of urgency.

The focus of Babuschkin Ventures is on AI safety research and funding startups in the field of AI and agentic systems. The aim is to support projects that make advanced AI trustworthy and aligned with human interests. However, there is no information available about a dinner with Max Tegmark playing a role in the inception of Babuschkin Ventures.

Babuschkin thanked every member of the xAI team for their contributions, time, and sacrifices. His departure marks a new chapter in his career, but his impact on the AI industry, particularly at xAI, will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
