Emmy Awards 2024 Spotlight: Framestore's Intricate Visual Effects Work on Fallout

Framestore's VFX Magic in "Fallout" Revealed

Framestore, the renowned visual effects studio, played a significant role in bringing the post-apocalyptic series "Fallout" to life. The studio's work was particularly focused on creating intricate atmospheric effects and visual representations of mutated creatures like the Gulper and Yao Guai.

The team at Framestore used Boris FX Silhouette as a key tool in their workflow for "Fallout". This versatile software was employed for a variety of tasks, including creating rough roto mattes, shot development, animation integration, and environment work.

One of the most challenging aspects of the VFX work was coordinating the Gulper's gulping action while managing its surroundings and volume, as well as integrating Yao Guai with the Power Armor during mauling scenes. For these complex character and cloth reconstructions, as well as frame-by-frame painting, Silhouette proved to be indispensable.

The data management, flexibility, and intuitive spline control of Boris FX Silhouette were particularly beneficial for artist productivity and speed in Framestore's workflow for "Fallout". The software's ability to create custom reference frame presets, provide proper onion skin functionality, offer image caching, and record strokes was also found to be highly beneficial.

The Montreal-based team at Framestore was responsible for all work associated with the Gulper and Yao Guai characters, including concept work, asset build, and shot execution. Joao Sita, the VFX Supervisor for the team's work on "Fallout", oversaw these efforts.

Yavor Asenov, the Head of Paint and Roto for the team's work on "Fallout", led the creation of numerous roto mattes for the Gulper integration in episode 3.

The top-down shot of the Gulper reaching out to Lucy on the pier and the scenes with the Gulper gulping Thaddeus were favorite and most proud-of moments for the team.

It's worth noting that Framestore used Silhouette for all Paint and Roto tasks on "Fallout" (season one). The overall control of the artists' workflows within Silhouette and the Mocha integration was valuable in a production pipeline.

The team's efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they are currently Emmy nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in A Season or a Movie for their work on "Fallout" (Prime Video).

The team at Framestore utilized technology to animate intricate gadgets and props in the post-apocalyptic series "Fallout," enhancing the overall entertainment value of the movies-and-tv show. The versatile software, Boris FX Silhouette, was crucial in this process, aiding in the creation of custom reference frame presets, providing proper onion skin functionality, and facilitating frame-by-frame painting, ultimately contributing to their Emmy-nominated special visual effects.
