The 27-inch Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF merges cutting-edge technology and impressive visuals, offering 3D gameplay experiences that were breathtaking during our hands-on session earlier this month.

Two embedded stereo cameras with lenticular lenses in the monitor's top bezel track your eyes, creating life-like visuals. The technicalities boil down to this: the cameras direct imagery to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, connected to a Maingear gaming rig with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor. But to enjoy this 3D spectacle, you'll need the Samsung Reality Hub app running on your device.

It's all about the future at a price. While the Odyssey 3D monitor may not appeal to budget-conscious gamers, this unique piece of technology is designed for those who crave the edge of what's next. The Nvidia RTX 3080, though affordable for many, is the lowest-spec GPU required to operate the Odyssey 3D monitor. Remember, "cheap" isn't the buzzword here because that's never been the point for the best of future tech.

Forecasting the Future of 3D Monitors

Samsung is optimistic about the future of 3D monitor technology and its potential to create more immersive, realistic gaming experiences. David You, Head of Product Marketing, Monitors, Samsung Electronics America, shared:

"Samsung is bullish about the future of 3D monitor technology. Our studies have shown that more gamers are anticipating the next generation of games to be more immersive and realistic. To capitalize on this growing demand, we are developing partnerships with key gaming studios such as Nexon and Round8 for titles like 'Khazan' and 'Lies of P' and are working closely with other gaming studios to launch dozens of new titles by the end of this year.

Samsung's Odyssey 3D Monitor can also convert non-DRM protected video (e.g., YouTube) from 2D to 3D, expanding the use cases for 3D technology beyond games."

So, what's so different about the Odyssey 3D monitor?

Despite previous three-dimensional technologies, the Odyssey 3D monitor delivers an exceptional and captivating experience. If you grew up enjoying 3D movies, here's what sets it apart:

  1. No glasses required - A massive plus, especially for glasses-wearers like myself.
  2. You're in control. You can rewind to manipulate your avatar in games or even to adjust the 3D effect. Being able to control the intensity helps counter any discomfort or unease associated with 3D technology.

Unfortunately, this monitor isn't designed for speed records. A Samsung rep says that while it's not the fastest monitor in their lineup, its purpose is focused on innovation and providing revolutionary future tech for those seeking it.

At launch, Samsung has announced its support for the games below, many of which offer rich, immersive, and artistic gaming experiences.

  • The First Berserker: Khazan ★
  • Lies of P
  • Stray
  • Dragonball Z:kakarot
  • Little Nightmares II
  • F.I.S.T
  • SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
  • Wigmund
  • Grand Theft Auto III - The Definitive Edition
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition
  • Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed
  • The Smurfs - Dreams
  • PALWORLD

Remember, Samsung isn't the only one making waves in the 3D monitor market. Lenovo also offers a 27-inch 3D monitor, the Lenovo ThinkVision display, which uses eye-tracking cameras, but features an embedded 3D engine more versatile with different computers. That said, this 3D gaming with the ThinkVision display may pose challenges due to its 60Hz max refresh rate, whereas the Odyssey 3D monitor delivers an impressive 165Hz.

But, it's not cheap to talk

Despite its impressive capabilities, prepare to splurge - the preorder price, as of Wednesday, April 16, is $1,999. However, if you act fast, you can enjoy a slew of discounts and add-ons that significantly lower the final cost.

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF, a laptop monitor, integrates advanced technology and stunning visuals, offering immersive 3D gaming experiences that were captivating during our recent encounter. The monitor's top bezel is equipped with embedded stereo cameras and lenticular lenses that track your eyes, ensuring life-like visuals.

The technical details involve an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, connected to a Maingear gaming laptop, complete with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor. The Samsung Reality Hub app on your device is essential for experiencing the 3D spectacle this monitor offers.

The Odyssey 3D monitor is not a budget-friendly gadget; rather, it caters to tech enthusiasts who crave innovation on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and future technology. Even the lowest-spec GPU, the Nvidia RTX 3080, may be expensive for some.

Samsung's confidence in 3D monitor technology is evident, as they plan to collaborate with gaming studios to develop new titles and enhance 3D application capabilities, expanding use cases beyond gaming.

Although other brands like Lenovo also offer 3D monitors, the Odyssey 3D monitor stands out for its advanced features and higher 165Hz refresh rate compared to the Lenovo ThinkVision display's 60Hz max refresh rate.

Despite its high price tag, early adopters can take advantage of pre-order promotions, including a $200 Samsung credit and a JBL Quantum ONE Headset, making the purchase more appealing. The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF 4K 165Hz Gaming Monitor is currently available for pre-order at Samsung for $1,999.
