Epic Settles Antitrust Case with Samsung, Google Still Faces Suit
Epic Games Inc. has reached a settlement in its antitrust case against Samsung Electronics Co. The dispute centered around Samsung's alleged anticompetitive conduct and Epic's quest for unspecified damages.
Epic launched its own mobile app store in August 2023, challenging the dominance of Google's Play Store. However, Samsung planned to block downloads of competing Android apps, including Epic's, with a default setting. Epic accused Google and Samsung of conspiring to block rival app marketplaces through these settings.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Samsung will address Epic's concerns. Following this, Epic dismissed its claims against Samsung, leading to the recent settlement. Meanwhile, a federal judge ordered Google to lift restrictions preventing rival app marketplaces and billing systems.
While the case against Samsung is settled, Google remains a defendant in the ongoing antitrust case. Epic's mobile app store launch and subsequent allegations against Google and Samsung have sparked discussions about app distribution and competition in the mobile market.
