Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin envisions that Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (ZK-EVMs) will be essential to Ethereum's security and verification process in the future.

In a recent blog post, Buterin delves into Ethereum's security and decentralization strategies, highlighting the network's multi-client philosophy.

Buterin stresses that the privacy-protecting aspects of ZK technology could potentially disrupt the broader EVM ecosystem. By bundling numerous transactions into one proof, Layer 2 protocols in ZK rollups have scaled Ethereum and effectively utilized ZK proofs.

ZK-EVMs will de facto become a third significant Ethereum client, just as vital as execution and consensus clients are currently, as they evolve to validate execution on Mainnet.

Buterin also anticipates that clients may start experimenting with ZK-EVMs to verify Ethereum block execution independently, especially once stateless clients are in place, and there's no technical need to directly re-execute every block to maintain the state.
