EU-Funded HiHELIOS Project Launches to Revolutionize Energy Storage
The EU-funded HiHELIOS project has kicked off, aiming to revolutionise energy storage near me. Led by 12 partners from six countries, this Horizon Europe project seeks to develop innovative modular hybrid battery systems, combining second-life NMC battery modules and high-power storage technologies like LFP batteries or supercapacitors.
HiHELIOS targets long-duration storage, aiming for a lifespan of over 5,000 cycles. The project is deploying its hybrid energy storage system (HESS) in four distinct use cases across Europe to demonstrate its versatility. These use cases range from grid support to industrial applications and e-mobility.
The project aims to achieve a levelised cost of storage (LCOS) below 0.05 €/kWh by 2030. To reach this goal, HiHELIOS is developing a smart, layered control architecture for optimal performance. The system integrates Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries or supercapacitors for rapid power bursts, ensuring high power and energy density.
HiHELIOS is seeking stakeholders and industrial partners to join its mission. By 2030, the project aims to deliver four fully operational demonstrators at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7. The successful implementation of HiHELIOS could significantly enhance Europe's public storage capabilities, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient power grid.
