Europe's advance towards AI development gains momentum, yet calls for regulatory adjustment loom large

The European Commission has unveiled a new AI Continent Action Plan, aiming to bolster the EU's AI leadership and deployment across the continent. In response, the Center for Data Innovation has issued a statement from Ayesha Bhatti, Head of Digital Policy, UK & EU.

Bhatti commends the plan, stating it as a necessary correction long overdue. The plan focuses on key enablers, including greater access to computation, use of high-quality data, upskilling the workforce, and encouraging AI deployment in priority sectors. Bhatti believes these enablers will turn Europe's world-class R&D into a competitive AI marketplace.

However, Bhatti emphasizes that without tackling regulatory roadblocks, this plan is merely window dressing. The European Commission must tackle obstacles that make deploying AI difficult and expensive, such as the complexity and costs associated with the EU AI Act and GDPR.

Simplifying the AI Act is welcomed, but Bhatti urges action beyond this, suggesting that both the Act and GDPR need to be streamlined for wide-scale AI adoption. By removing these hurdles, Europe can demonstrate it is open for business and ready to lead, signaling this to innovators.

According to the Center for Data Innovation, addressing regulatory challenges and streamlining existing frameworks can create a more conducive environment for AI innovation and deployment while maintaining a commitment to ethical AI practices.
