Evaluated over 25 cameras in the recent year - here's my top 5 preferred models of 2025 to date

If you're a cameraphile, then 2025 has been quite the rollercoaster, with a slew of exciting new camera models hitting the market. From Apple-inspired designs to groundbreaking lens technology, this year has kept photographers on their toes.

We've already reviewed over 25 cameras this year, with even more lenses and accessories to boot. One of the most talked-about cameras of the year is the Sigma BF, a device that's had folks divided – loving and hating the experience all at once!

Fujifilm really pushed the boundaries this year, with the sensational premium GFX100RF medium-format camera and the quirky X half compact boasting film roll mode. Nintendo doubled down on their affordable credentials, launching the new Z50 II and Z5 II – with the latter redefining what entry-level full-frame cameras can achieve. Panasonic launched the uncharacteristically expensive Lumix S1R II and S1 II full-frame mirrorless cameras, with the latter still offering the best bang for your buck for video users.

For pure photography fun, OM System's OM-3 delivered the goods in a compact, newly-designed retro Micro Four Thirds package. Both DJI and Insta360 hit it out of the park with their respective new products; the DJI Mavic 4 Pro is easily the best camera drone for pros, while the X5 extends Insta360's dominance in the 360 camera space.

Canon pushed video-focused cameras to content creators, with the EOS R50V and PowerShot V1 seemingly receiving lukewarm responses, much to Canon's disappointment. Sony's FX2 video camera just surfaced recently, with its new lenses being quite special, including the incredible 50-150mm F2 GM.

In the second half of 2025, we're expecting a prolific season for DJI and Insta360, who look set to duke it out following a string of action camera rumors. Elsewhere, it could be a quieter time for most of the other leading brands, but Sony and Canon have some pro gear on the way, with a new mirrorless camera from either brand in 2025 feeling practically inevitable.

Let's dive into some of our favorite camera gear so far this year:

5. Insta360 X5 (Best Action Camera of 2025)

Despite potential competition from a DJI 360 action camera coming later this year, the Insta360 X5 has set the bar impossibly high for 360-degree video. With larger 1/1.28-inch sensors and enhanced processing power, the X5 delivers sharp and dynamic auto-stitched 8K and 5.7K 360 movies even in low light conditions. Its user-replaceable lenses and durable design make it a great choice for action enthusiasts.

4. Fujifilm GFX100RF (Best Compact Camera of 2025)

Part medium-format camera, part compact beast, the Fujifilm GFX100RF offers breathtaking clarity with its 102MP sensor and rangefinder-style design. Its new aspect ratio dial, impressive battery life, and premium handling make it an absolute joy to use, although its lack of image stabilization might force you to pack a tripod for photography day trips.

3. Nikon Z5 II (Best Mirrorless Camera of 2025)

Despite its entry-level price and positioning, the Nikon Z5 II is packed with professional-level features, including superior IBIS, subject-detection autofocus, 30fps JPEG continuous shooting, and impressive 4K video recording capable of 10-bit video and 12-bit N-RAW photos. For excellent all-round performance and value, it's hard to beat the Z5 II.

2. DJI Mavic 4 Pro (Best Drone of 2025)

Crafted with three cameras on an innovative gimbal, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro delivers unmatched aerial videography and photography prowess in its price bracket. The Hasselblad-branded 28mm camera excels in low light and offers great dynamic range, capturing incredibly detailed images with stunning sharpness. Whether you're filming stunning landscapes or fast-paced action, the Mavic 4 Pro is a fantastic choice.

1. Sigma BF (Best Design of 2025)

The Sigma BF is a bold, unusual camera that's loyalists can't get enough of—despite its lack of a viewfinder, in-body stabilization, control layout, and other potential drawbacks. Its striking, minimalist design has inspired photographers to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. The images captured with the BF are truly stunning, and its unique charm is impossible to ignore.

Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM (Best Lens of 2025)

When it comes to Sony's 50-150mm lens, the unique focal length range might seem puzzling, but once you put it to the test, it's hard to go back. This all-rounder lens offers superb low-light performance, excellent bokeh, sharp images, and smooth autofocus, making it an indispensable tool for sports, events, and candid photography.

All these standout releases prove that 2025 has been a great year for camera enthusiasts. Whether you're a budding photographer or a seasoned pro, there's something out there to meet your needs and fine-tune your creative vision. So stay tuned for what the rest of 2025 has in store!

Gadget enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that drones have made a significant stride this year, with the DJI Mavic 4 Pro being lauded as the best camera drone for professionals. On the other hand, mirrorless cameras continue to innovate, as evidenced by the Sigma BF, a camera that has captured the attention of photographers with its unique design and striking images. The technology sector has certainly kept up with the demands of camera enthusiasts this year, offering a variety of exciting options.
