Ex-HBO executives establish May One production company
In the heart of Bucharest, a new production company has emerged, ready to make its mark on the international stage. May One, founded by former HBO Europe executives Johnathan Young and Ioanina Pavel, is set to produce television drama for both local and global audiences.
With extensive experience developing and producing drama in Romania and Central Europe, Young and Pavel have a wealth of knowledge to draw upon. Young's Executive Producer credits include the award-winning Polish series Wataha (The Pack), the Romanian-German international co-production Hackerville, and HBO Max's Cold War spy drama Spy/Master. Pavel's work at HBO Romania includes the production of hit series such as Umbre (Shadows) and Hackerville.
Ioanina Pavel began her career at HBO Romania as a Development Executive, where she honed her skills on popular Romanian gangster drama Umbre (Shadows) and Hackerville. Pavel has since produced a variety of series, including romantic drama RUXX and reality contest One True Singer, for HBO Max. Johnathan Young's most recent credit is HBO Max's Cold War spy drama Spy/Master.
The company's first commission is the original Netflix series Subteran, currently in production. This project is being produced alongside Tudor Reu from Mobra Films. May One's productions will tap into unique Romanian vision and landscape to create bold, genre shows with broad appeal. The company aims to create high-quality drama that brings a different flavor to international audiences.
Ioanina Pavel expressed that Romania has unique ideas and creative talent, and the goal of May One is to elevate these for local and global audiences. Pavel stated, "Romania is a hotbed for creativity and provides an enticing backdrop for TV." Young echoed this sentiment, saying, "We believe that Romania has a lot to offer the international stage, and we're excited to help bring these unique stories to life."
May One will work with established and new talent from both within and outside Romania. The company will develop, produce, and provide creative partnership for series shot in Romania. With its strong foundation and ambitious goals, May One is poised to become a significant player in the global television landscape.
