Examining 'The Infinite Retina' (Second Edition) Critique: Penned by Irena Cronin and Robert Scoble
In 2016, when I first delved into XR writing, Robert Scoble's vision in "When The Fourth Wave" sparked my enthusiasm and propelled me to pen "Charlie Fink's Metaverse." Despite a decade of hype cycles and revelations about the tech industry, Scoble, now in partnership with analyst Irena Cronin, remains as optimistic as ever.
Rereading "The Infinite Retina (Second Edition)" rekindled my appreciation for Scoble's captivating storytelling. His conversational style contrasts perfectly with Cronin's analytical perspective, creating an alluring blend of expertise to navigate the expansive realm of technology: Spatial Computing, AI, Metaverse, autonomous vehicles, virtual beings, and life redefined by technology.
Cronin and Scoble illuminate the shift from screens to the physical world through "Spatial Computing," which ties together AI, AR, VR, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and digital assistants. They recognize the breakneck pace of advancements, where predictions might become outdated before the ink dries.
The book is structured around seven sectors expected to be transformed by Spatial Computing: transportation, media and telecom, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, finance, and education. Autonomous vehicles, media, and retail are set for significant change, and AI will become increasingly prevalent in manufacturing. Healthcare might incorporate AI diagnostics in real-time, finance could benefit from 3D data visualization, and education would transition to immersive, interactive environments.
Cronin and Scoble's enthusiasm is contagious. If schools still published textbooks, this would deserve placement on the reading list. "The Infinite Retina" provides an expansive, impressive survey of the digital future's shaping forces. Its breadth, however, means some ideas receive broad strokes rather than thorough analyses. Occasionally, the hyperbole can feel excessive, as was the case when I suggested mobile phones would be replaced by headsets in the past.
