Saving Fuel with a Lighter Car: A Simple Solution for Every Driver

According to various sources, including the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as testing organization TÜV Süd, removing unnecessary attachments and reducing the weight of your vehicle can significantly improve fuel efficiency.

Firstly, it's important to consider the weight of roof boxes, bike racks, spare wheels, and luggage. These attachments not only add weight but also create aerodynamic drag, which can decrease fuel efficiency, especially at highway speeds. By removing these attachments when they are not needed, you can save fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA estimate that removing 100 pounds of weight improves fuel economy by about 1–2%.

But the savings don't stop there. Every 50 kg (110 pounds) removed can save about 1–2% of fuel. For example, carrying 13 kg less (roughly the weight of some roof cargo boxes or light luggage) can save fuel by approximately 0.2–0.5%.

TÜV Süd, a testing organization that provides advice on vehicle efficiency and safety, suggests that on average, removing attachments can save at least one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers. They also encourage drivers to consider removing any additional weight from their cars to save even more fuel.

The benefits of this simple change extend beyond just fuel savings. By reducing the weight and aerodynamic drag of your vehicle, you can also improve its overall fuel efficiency. This advice applies not only to trips after a vacation but can also be beneficial for daily driving.
