France imposes a prohibition on public smoking.

Title: France Implements Smoking Ban in Public Places to Protect Children's Health

From July, France will enforce a smoking ban in public spaces, such as parks, bus stops, and areas near schools, to safeguard children from the harmful effects of tobacco. The French government aims to strengthen the protection of non-smokers, following concerns over the high number of tobacco-related deaths each year.

Health Minister Catherine Vautrin announced the new regulations in an interview published in "Ouest-France" on Thursday. According to Vautrin, "the freedom to smoke ends where the right to clean air for children begins." The ban seeks to eliminate tobacco from places where children are present, significantly furthering efforts to reduce tobacco consumption.

The proposed restrictions will prohibit smoking in outdoor public spaces where children are likely to be present, including beaches, parks, school premises, bus shelters, stadiums, and sports facilities. Violations will result in fines of up to 135 euros, as stated by Vautrin.

Smoking will still be permitted in the outdoor areas of hospitality establishments, and the ban does not apply to e-cigarettes, although plans are underway to restrict the nicotine content and permitted flavors in e-cigarettes.

The current ban on smoking in restaurants and clubs, which has been enforced since 2008, is part of a broader government campaign against tobacco use. France claims 75,000 lives each year due to tobacco consumption, around 13% of the total annual deaths. Approximately a quarter of the French population smokes daily.

The new regulations are an essential step in France's commitment to reducing smoking-related deaths and diseases by protecting children and the general public from passive smoke exposure. The long-term goal is to foster a smoke-free generation in France.
